Zhenjin | Mongol Empire

Zhenjin | Mongol Empire

Overview

Zhenjin (From 1243 to 1285/January 5, 1286), sometimes known as Jingim, Chinkim, or Chingkim, was Kublai Khan's son and Tolui's grandson.

Life

Kublai Khan and Chabi Khatun had him as their second son. When he was born in 1243, the Chinese Zen monk Haiyun gave him the name Zhenjin ("True Gold"). In the year 1262, his father appointed him as the head of the Central Secretariat (Zhongshu Sheng), and in the year 1273, Kublai Khan appointed him as the Crown Prince of the Yuan dynasty. He was a staunch Confucianism follower, having been educated by Chinese intellectuals such as Yao Shu (from 1203 to 1280), Dou Mo (From 1196 to 1280), Liu Bingzhong (From 1216 to 1274), and Wang Xun. He was said to have studied Classic of Poetry and Classic of Filial Piety, among other things. In the year 1285, after the death of Zhenjin's opponent Ahmad Fanakati (as a consequence of a conspiracy by Zhenjin, according to Rashidaddin), a Confucian-trained official in the South even offered to Kublai to abdicate in favour of Zhenjin, which enraged Kublai. Drogön Chögyal Phagpa, who penned the famous book "Explanation of the Knowable" for Zhenjin, was also a friend of his. According to Yuan History, he died of drunkenness on January 5 1286, eight years before his father, Kublai Khan. However, it is possible that it was not just a case of drinking too much. It further said that soon before his death, several court ministers sought to suggest that Kublai Khan cede his throne to Prince Zhenjin due to his advanced age and the fact that Zhenjin was well-liked across the empire. Zhenjin, on the other hand, attempted to prevent this. Unfortunately, Kublai Khan found out and was enraged, which scared Zhenjin and may have caused him to drink excessively. In his father's death, Kublai Khan appointed Zhenjin's son Temür as the new Crown Prince. On February 25, 1293, Kublai called him Taizi Mingxiao after his death. On June 3, 1294, Temür awarded him the posthumous designation Emperor Wenhui Mingxiao and the temple name Yuzong.
