Mongol Medieval Tribes and Clans

Mongol Medieval Tribes and Clans

Overview

When Temujin (later Genghis Khan) gathered the several tribes under his power and established the Mongol Empire in the early 13th century, the designation Mongol Tribes was created as an umbrella word. There were 19 Nirun tribes (N) descended from Bodonchar and 18 Darligin tribes (D) that were core Mongolic tribes but did not descend from Bodonchar. As a result of the unification, the Mongols developed a new ethnic identity. The Mongolian nation and other Inner Asian people are descended from those clans. Almost every tribe and clan recorded in the Mongol Secret History, and a few tribes mentioned in the Tarikh-i-Rashidi.
