Overview

The Diversity Visa (DV) is also known as the Green Card Lottery. The DV visa allows foreign citizens to transfer permanently to the U.S. After getting the permit you can live in any of the states as a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) of the U.S, find for a job, get a driver’s license, and get married or have children in the U.S. You can also able to apply for a U.S citizenship after a certain period.

Qualifications

You should meet up the following requirements to be eligible to apply for the Diversity Visa and move to the U.S permanently:

  • Your countries should be allowed to apply for the DV Program
  • Your age should be at least 18 years old to apply as the head of the household. You and your children both can apply together if you are over 18 years’ old
  • You should have to complete high school and have a high school diploma, or You must have minimum two years of work experience in the last five years in an occupation that falls under Job Zone 4 or 5 as per the U.S Department of Labor (DOL) requirements

How to Apply for DV Visa

The Diversity Visa application is around October or November every year and is made for the next two years. This means you can get the visa and move to the U.S in the year 2020 if you applied in 2018. There is only one straightforward online application for the DV Program that asks questions about the person’s background and personal information.  As soon as the State Department gives the announcement that they are accepting applications, you should fill the form as soon as possible after the State Department provides the decision and this application is also free.  You will get a unique confirmation number after applying. You have to save this number to check your application status and also apply for the DV visa if you selected.  After getting selected, you can start your application for the Diversity Lottery Visa. But during this time, you can’t make any arrangements to sell your house, car, resign from your job, or purchase flights. It doesn’t mean that you will get the visa if you are selected in the lottery. You must have to apply for a visa. There are several following steps to apply for the Diversity Visa:

Fill in Form DS-260:

Form DS-260, Online Immigrant Visa Application is the standard form for nonimmigrant visa claimants. This form can be accessed through the confirmation number. You have to enter the confirmation number without zeros. When you submit it, you will get an authorization page and code which you need for your document file.

Reimburse the application fee:

You must pay the visa application charge to be able to remain with the rest of the application stages. Also, the visa petition fee, other dues may apply dependent on the affiliation of your country, and the U.S termed visa issuance charges. After you have paid the dues, you must save the money receipts and affix them to the documents file.

Make ready your document file:

You must have your completed document file with you when your interview is scheduled. You have to submit all the originals documents, and it should be in English. You have to translate all your documents by a licensed translator and also make sure that all of them are correct. Although the U.S Embassy will require the original documents, you are suggested to bring a set of copies of your documents too just in case they need them. These documents are the following:

  • Your valid original passport
  • Your two recent photographs and per person of your family if they are applying with you
  • Evidence of your education records and employment histories
  • Your and each of your family member birth certificates
  • Documents of court, prison, and police records
  • Your marriage certificates or evidence of a divorce
  • Your military records if you were in the military

Complete a medical examination:

If you want to immigrate to the U.S, you should get the necessary medical check-ups and vaccines. The documents and the check-ups should be completed by a licensed doctor.

Appear the interview:

The U.S Embassy will contact you to schedule the interview. You must be present on the scheduled date and time. You have to bring these documents with you at the interview:

  • The Diversity Visa appointment Letter which you get from the website when you check your status and find that you have been selected
  • Form DS-260 confirmation letter
  • Your valid original passport and recent photographs
  • Your valid medical examination forms checked by a licensed doctor
  • Your others supporting documents

You will be asked several questions at the interview by the consular officer to decide whether you are appropriate to receive the DV visa or not. You will be notified about the decision within a few weeks.
